It was great having my best friend from high school Dr. Aaron Kauhane give a talk about his journey being a doctor to the Na Koa and Alii classes this past weekend. He talked about how he graduated from Punahou School in 1987 and went off to graduate from Whittier College where he played football too. He discussed how it took him two times to pass the difficult MCAT exam. And after not getting into the University of Hawaii Medical School that he needed to persevere to pursue his dream at a mainland medical school. He worked very hard to pursue his dream and I am glad that he didn’t listen to me back then. I told him after he didn’t pass his MCAT exam to go work at “Foot Locker”. Anyway, he held fast to his dream and now he is a Family Doctor for Straub out in Mililani Town Center. This is a great story of how a local boy can do anything he puts his mind to with commitment, dedication, and perseverance. All our students at HFS should have other career dreams as well. I explained to the kids that the average length of time someone plays in the NFL is 3 years. What will you do after that ? I know that one day we will have dentists, lawyers, Doctors, entrepreneurs, etc that have come out of Hawaii Football School. Anyway, lets continue to focus on School first and then football.
Aloha,

Coach Chad Owens left for the Mainland earlier this week to train and hopefully get another opportunity to play in the NFL. If everything goes well, it will be exciting to see Coach Chad play on Sundays! He is a great role model for hard work and dedication, just seeing him play again will be inspiring for the kids in Hawaii who aspire to play football in pop warner, high school, college and beyond. Coach Chad taught his last class (for now) this past Saturday and he plans on coming back July. Good luck Coach Chad, you have gone so far to live your dream!

Aloha Everybody!
We just finished our first live scrimmage of spring yesterday and it was quite exciting. I made one catch during the scrimmage and it was pretty nice to finally experience the college game in a live setting. Spring football has been great so far, we have great fan support here and it’s exciting to come out to practice on a daily basis and continue to get better. Maurice Jones-Drew, the former UCLA running back and current Jacksonville Jaguars star, came by practice on Saturday and gave us a few words of encouragement. My message for today’s blog is to always work hard to achieve your goals. Football is a very tough and physical game but you must learn to embrace it and make it fun to challenge yourself on a daily basis so that you may improve. In my experiences here at UCLA, I found that coaches will take notice of a guy working hard and will begin to work you in to more and more opportunities to get on the field. Remember to continue to work hard even when you think nobody is watching. I will keep everybody posted on how the rest of spring ball goes and I hope everything is going well at HFS and back home. Happy Easter to you all and God Bless!
Aloha,
Ekolu Soon
